Tappercise defies most conventional wisdom
that applies to tap dancing. Although it may be true that you need to
start tap dancing at a very early age as some experts claim, you can start
tappercise at almost any age. Unlike professional tapping where being
technically correct, making perfect sounds, and pleasing your audience are
essential, tappercise is more about having fun, getting exercise, making
friends, and feeling good about yourself.
This is not to say that tap dancing and
tappercise use different steps. Steps that are used in tap dancing,
such as slap, flap, or spank, are also used in tappercise. Even some
of the more difficult steps found in tap dancing, such as a double shuffle
or paradiddle, are used in tappercise. Even if you never go
beyond basics, such as doing stomps, stamps, or ball changes, you can still
have fun with tappercise, get a good workout, and feel good. If you
want to go beyond basics, you can always add pullbacks, wings,
grapevines, essences, or a Lindy to your tappercise program.
